Why We Built Iron Horse Automotive: We Have Heart

Frank has been taking things apart, putting them back together, and figuring out why they work for almost as long as he can remember.

His earliest automotive lessons came around three years old, following his Pawpaw and learning the ropes. His father continued that education as he grew. What started as a little boy learning beside his dad and grandfather became a lifelong passion and nearly three decades of hands-on automotive experience.

Before formal shops and certifications ever entered the picture, Frank became what many people would call a shade-tree mechanic: repairing vehicles, helping friends and family, learning through experience, and refusing to accept that something was beyond saving simply because it was old or complicated.

Frank spent three years with LKQ dismantling and parting out vehicles, gaining an inside-out understanding of motorcycles, cars, trucks, vans, diesels, and countless makes and models. His professional background included two years with Harley-Davidson, four years with Jensen, one year with Volvo, and two years with Toyota.

One of the frustrations we have with the automotive industry is what mechanics sometimes jokingly call the "parts cannon." A code appears. A component seems related. Replace it. Still broken? Replace the next thing. That can become extremely expensive for the customer very quickly.

A trouble code is information, but it is not always a diagnosis. Frank enjoys the harder part: tracing the problem, understanding what the vehicle is telling him, testing the system, and finding the actual cause before recommending a repair whenever possible.

That philosophy applies whether someone brings us a newer vehicle filled with electronics or an old truck that has seen better days. Frank still maintains his own beloved '90s truck — so if you affectionately refer to your vehicle as a rust bucket, you are among friends.

We're a local Omaha family. Frank has called Nebraska home for about 15 years, while Alyssa has been in and out of the state throughout her life through her family's farming roots and her father's military service. Between us, we're also raising our own Brady Bunch of seven children.

Owning his own automotive business had been one of Frank's long-term dreams for years. Eventually Alyssa asked a fairly simple question: Why not now?

Iron Horse Automotive quietly began with a soft launch at a nonprofit car show in August of 2025. By August 2026, our reach had grown enough that the little side business needed to become something more intentional.

Iron Horse Automotive became a real business because we realized there was room for the kind of automotive service we want to provide. Not a sales experience. Not a race to see how large an estimate can become. Just professional automotive service from people who care about the outcome.

One of the principles we agreed on from the beginning was simple: we will not use someone's lack of automotive knowledge against them. You should not need to bring your dad, your mechanically inclined friend, or somebody who "speaks car" just to feel comfortable asking questions.

If something needs to be repaired now, we'll tell you. If something is wearing but can reasonably wait, we'll tell you that too. If there are options, we want you to understand them.

Our job is not just to understand your vehicle. Our job is to help you understand what is happening with it well enough to make an informed decision about your own money. We know automotive repairs can disrupt an entire household budget — that is one reason we work to avoid unnecessary dealer-style markups where possible.

Iron Horse primarily provides appointment-based automotive service at your location, with evening and weekend availability. We built our availability around the hours when traditional repair shops are often closed.

For many people, finding time to leave a vehicle at a shop between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. means taking time off work, arranging transportation, finding childcare, or losing access to the vehicle for an entire day. When the repair allows it, we would rather schedule the work around real life.

Our services range from repair and advanced diagnostics to aftermarket parts installation and performance upgrades. We enjoy keeping older vehicles on the road just as much as helping someone make a vehicle more capable, more enjoyable, or more uniquely theirs.

There is another service Iron Horse offers that has nothing to do with generating revenue. For individuals leaving domestic violence situations who are concerned that their vehicle may contain an unwanted tracking device, Iron Horse offers a complimentary one-hour vehicle tracker search and inspection.

We take that service seriously and conduct a thorough physical search rather than a quick glance around the obvious places. If we locate a suspected tracking device, we do not remove it ourselves. We document where it was found and ask the vehicle owner to contact law enforcement so the device can be addressed and preserved through the appropriate police-report process.

There is no upsell attached to that service. There is no invoice waiting at the end. It exists because sometimes the most important thing we can do with the skills we have is simply help someone feel safer.

When we began thinking about what Iron Horse Automotive should represent, we kept returning to the same idea: We have heart.

Heart for the machines Frank has spent most of his life learning. Heart for the craft of diagnosing and repairing them correctly. Heart for the person trying to keep an older vehicle alive another few years. Heart for the enthusiast who has been saving for a performance upgrade. Heart for the customer who is anxious because they don't understand what the warning light means. Heart for the family trying to figure out whether this repair fits into this month's budget.

Our faith is part of why that matters to us. We pray that the love of God is visible in the way Iron Horse operates — not simply in what we say, but in how people are treated from the moment they contact us. In the repairs we recommend. In the repairs we tell someone can wait. In the questions we answer. In the patience we show.
